The Grey Roost
Vitamin & Mineral Supplementation
-
Birds on pelleted diets usually do not need any Vitamin or Mineral Supplementation
unless your avian vet prescribes it for a specific reason. Supplementation is most often not necessary, and can prove dangerous, to give a bird eating a pelleted diet, vitamin or mineral supplements. Species specific pellets contain what should be adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy grey. Many don't realize it, but it is possible to over-supplement with vitamins or minerals, resulting in toxicosis or even organ damage and death
Some birds may have special needs during certain times, and your avian vet may prescribe a specific supplement.
Our Greys, for instance, can develop seizures due to low blood calcium, also known as hypocalcemia. I had this with my Timneh, and he was prescribed a liquid calcium supplement called Neocalglucon. Usually low calcium is the result of problems utilizing or absorbing calcium, and not from not being offered enough calcium rich foods.
Its best to have bloods drawn at your well birdy visits to monitor your greys . This will tell you if you need supplementation or not.
Vitamin supplementation should not be added to your greys drinking water. Bacteria will start to grow in the water dish after two hours. Best to add liquid supplementation to moist foods, and powdered over staple diet, if your vet advises that you need them.
